Three local rivalries were on the cards for week three on Saturday, with Boston RFC downing Boston Irish Wolfhounds, Mystic River defeating Middlesex, while in New York, Old Blue got the better of White Plains.

In Boston, the visiting Boston Irish got off to an early 3-0 lead and maintained the lead for much of the first half before Boston got on the board with its first try of the day to leave the halftime score at 7-3. Boston added another converted try soon after the half to push the score to 14-3.

The wheels came off for the Wolfhounds soon after, as the team incurred a yellow card and then a red in short succession. Boston took full advantage, quickly notching two converted tries.  Although he Wolfhounds regrouped and clawed back one score, the game was over as a contest and Boston ran out 38-8 winners.

Boston Coach Mike Diamantopoulos noted the “choppy nature of the game, with stops and starts that did not benefit either team. The Hounds played hard, but our pace took over in the second half “. Wolfhounds Assistant Coach Stu Abbott agreed that “it was always going to be difficult against Boston, especially against a very good Boston back line, but going down to thirteen players really cost us”. Old Blue is off to a (3-0) start, while White Plains slumps to a somewhat unlucky (0-3), losing each game by an average of less than ten points.

In Malden, a resurgent Mystic River notched the club’s first win of the season, seeing off the challenge of Middlesex 38-17. Middlesex had an early penalty but Mystic took the lead after a turnover and did not relinquish it for the rest of the game, slowly putting daylight between the teams. Mystic moves to (1-2), while Middlesex is at (1-1).

Pivotal games are up-coming on Sept 28th, as Old Blue comes to Boston where the winner will be in a great position in the standings. Middlesex travels to NYAC in what could be an entertaining matchup, with the fast surface promising to make for a good spectacle.

NYAC appears to be back to top form, and although the team did not have a league game this week, the defeated Olympic Club of San Francisco as part of the biennial competition between the two storied clubs.

Finally, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds also travel south to take on White Plains, with both teams desperate to notch their first win of the season.
