All Americans fall to Ontario Blues

In the final game of the Men’s Collegiate All Americans Summer tour, the AA’s dropped a 31-16 decision to the Ontario Blues at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA.

Following two hard games against Cambridge University, the All Americans had their hands full with the Canadian team, which was blending some newer players with several highly experienced ones in advance of the start of the Canadian season.

The MCAA’s had the better of the opening scoring opportunities but it took about twenty minutes to resister the first score, a drop goal by Kaleikaumakei Konrad. Ontario replied almost immediately, taking advantage of a turnover in midfield and using superior numbers for winger Jake Webster to jog in for five points.

Minutes later, the Ontario center combination of captain Derek Daypuck and Dan Moor combined for another Ontario score, Daypuck making a big break and Moor finishing it off. Daypuck in particular was highly visible throughout the day.

After a Madison Hughes penalty reduced the arrears to 6-12, Ontario again seemed to be about to score after a length of the field movement, but Hughes tracked down the attacker to preserve the score line.

Just before the half, a line break by center Kingsley McGowan led to a score by supporting second row Mike Lawrenson. The Hughes conversion gave the MCAA’s the lead 13-12.

Ten minutes into the second half, Ontario outhalf Shawn Windsor notched a try after a period of sustained pressure for a lead Ontario would not relinquish. Ontario was starting to enjoy the bulk of the territorial battle throughout much of the second half.

As time began to wind down, another Hughes penalty closed the gap to 16-19. But by now playing with a man advantage Ontario would finish stronger, with replacement David Worsley scoring in the corner and Dan Moor getting his second near the posts to wrap things up for a final score of 31-16 in favor of Ontario.

Coach Matt Sherman commented afterwards: “Hot temperatures, physical, experienced, big team and the third game in eight days, we knew it would be a tough game with lots of challenges to overcome. I think overall we rose to much of those challenges pretty well. There are a few things we could do better, and they are good learning experiences for our guys but overall there were a lot of positives out of this game….the boys stuck together and defended well and took pride in everybody doing their part and not having any letdowns… In the second half we struggled with the territory battle, as we did better in the first half, and that forced us to play more defense, and obviously playing a man short in the last fifteen minutes, finally the gates opened in the last five minutes, but we came within two meters of taking the lead even while down a man, that was pretty impressive but we came up a little short”.
