Sept 24, 2016 ARP Week 3 NYAC and Mystic Cruise to wins

NYAC and Mystic River were the big winners in Week 3, with Mystic rebounding from a narrow loss to Old Blue with a resounding 86-0 win over Boston RFC, while NYAC enjoyed a solid 44-7 outing on the road against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

In Canton, NYAC was on the board before the fans had settled in their seats, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The visiting team kept the pressure on, moving out to a 24-0 half time score, with a pretty combination between Pro player Harry Bennett and scrumhalf Justin Hundley being the highlight of the half. The Wolfhounds had opportunities to get on the board but missed penalty kicks and inopportune turnovers denied the home side any points.

The high tempo continued through the second half, even as some reserves made their way onto the field.  “We played very well out of the blocks”, said NYAC coach Mick Quinn later, saying “we came out with a game plan and we executed it very well for the first twenty or thirty minutes, built up a score. After that Boston Irish certainly came back into it, and it would be silly to say we took our foot off the gas, we weren’t allowed to keep our foot on the gas as they certainly stood up to us. I thought our pack played very well, gave us the platform to get the lead and we held onto it for the rest of the game, but ultimately our win came from our first half performance”.

Wolfhounds’ Stu Abbott concurred with the assessment: “NYAC is a top quality side, but I’m impressed with the effort we gave.  We never let the heads droop, and battled to the end of the game”.

Standout performers on the day included hard working NYAC flanker Ross Deacon, very visible in a dominant NYAC pack, as well as Wolfhounds backs Paddy Owens and Danny Collins.

Week 4 will see NYAC play Old Blue in an intriguing game, while in Malden the Boston Irish Wolfhounds will try to slow down the Mystic River juggernaut.

ARP 2016 Week 1 Sept 10 Old Blue, NYAC cruise to wins

The New York sides had an excellent start to their fall ARP campaigns on the opening weekend, with Old Blue riding a dominant forwards performance to cruise to a 56-0 win on the road against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, while New York Athletic Club downed Boston RFC by a reported score of 50-10.

In Canton, following a memorial service for Patrick “Punter” Culleton, Old Blue and the Wolfhounds kicked off in nice but increasingly hot and humid conditions. Old Blue wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, with Rich Kirkland touching down to open the scoring in the first five minutes.  James Bird added the points for an early 7-0 lead.

Old Blue passed up an opportunity to add a three pointer by kicking to the corner, but the Wolfhounds successfully repulsed the attack. Midway through the half, Bird does slot a penalty for a ten point lead.

Signs are ominous for the Wolfhounds, as Old Blue completely destroys a couple of Wolfhound scrums. Old Blue has a strong side, with Demecus Beach, Harry Higgins and Trevor Cassidy prominent in the pack. With the Wolfhounds attempting to run out of their 22, Cassidy turns over the ball in a maul and brings it back untouched for another try.

The Wolfhounds turn down an opportunity for a three pointer by kicking for the corner, but the attack is seen off by Old Blue. A pretty drop kick from Connor Wallace-Sims and another try at the end leaves the halftime score at 27-0 in Old Blue’s favor.

A promising second half start for the Wolfhounds goes to naught as Old Blue take the ball back 95 meters for a try. Old Blue substituted liberally soon after but still dominated play, earning another try midway through the half before finishing with a flourish, scoring three tries in the final twelve minutes for a 56-0 scoreline.

“It’s nice to win, it’s a good start for us, though there’s plenty to work on” commented Old Blue coach Marty Veale afterwards, complimenting “the hard work the boys have put in for the last few weeks, we can see that it’s going to work, so it’s quite pleasing”.

Wolfhounds coach Stu Abbott, in comments after the game sad “it’s a new team for us and we are trying to play a new brand of rugby and it’s going to take a while for that to break in.  But credit to Old Blue, (they are) a good side and their #10 had a fine game. They have probably the strongest scrum in the whole league and they made us pay with that. We had a fair amount of unforced errors and a lot of things we need to tighten up on”.

The Wolfhounds will have the opportunity to test out their improvement next week, with a trip to Boston RFC. Old Blue will host Mystic River, a game Marty Veale is already focused on. “We know that (Mystic’s) forwards will come at us and so we have to tidy up our scrum and our first phase cleanouts…and we are looking forward to the challenge against the reigning D1 Champions and it will be a good challenge for us”.

Influx of PRO Rugby players to further elevate standard of play of ARP

The competitive level in the American Rugby Premiership was already very high, and now the standard of play promises to reach new heights with the inflow of half a dozen or more players from the ranks of the PRO Rugby organization.

The Big Apple, widely seen as a logical and valued location for a potential PRO Rugby team, will benefit most from players expected to join the two New York teams. No PRO players are currently known to be heading to the Boston area teams.

Harry Bennett, fly half out of Sacramento is attached to NYAC, and has already made an appearance in NYAC’s preseason game against the Capital Selects. Alex Hodgkinson and Jake Turnbull will add extra depth to the NYAC roster.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 7 Life 92 Boston 3; Old Blue 35 NYAC 28; Life 57 Boston Irish Wolfhounds 22

Ina  full slate of games this weekend, Life University was the big winner, taking maximum points from two games on a road trip to Boston, while the local showdown in New York had Old Blue getting the better of rivals NYAC.

The first of Life’s two games this weekend was played in unseasonable warm temperatures north of Boston. The visitors ran rampant over Boston RFC, scoring early and often to win 92-3.

Life’s second game of he weekend was comparably a closer affair, but another win for Life with a 57-22 over the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.  Featuring a young team, Life employed a pressure defense and lightning quick strikes to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Wolfhounds started off the scoring with an early penalty, but Life scored its first try of the day after about 18 minutes to claim a lead it would not relinquish.

Following a yellow card issued to a Life forward, the Wolfhounds enjoyed a long period of pressure, camped near the Life goal line. But a misfiring Wolfhounds lineout and stout Life defense ensured Life did not suffer any damage. Indeed Life turned things around and notched a shorthanded try and followed that up with two other in the last few minutes of the half to take a 26-3 halftime lead. Noteworthy was Life’s Conner Mooneyham, who claimed three of the four first half tries.

The second half was wonderfully entertaining for the spectators, with eight tries scored. The Wolfhounds come strong out of the gates to narrow the gap with a converted try, but two quick tries by Life extended the lead. The Wolfhounds scored one especially  crowd pleasing try, winger Danny Collins finishing off a sweeping movement featuring some quick passing. But every time the Wolfhounds scored, Life had a quick response, highlighted by a couple of intercept tries that put the icing on the cake for the 57-22 victory.

The ARP will take a break for the winter, with Life sitting pretty in an undefeated position, followed by Old Blue in second place.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 6 Wolfhounds over Boston; Mystic fall to Old Blue

October 24th, 2015. In the night game in New York, Old Blue came out all guns blazing and ran out to a first half 18-0 lead against high flying Mystic River. Michael St. Clair and Samuel Scroggins were the try scorers, and James Bird added the rest of the points through the boot for Old Blue.

Mystic clawed back a couple of penalties on either side of the half, and a try midway through the half brought the deficit to eight points. Old Blue responded with another Bird penalty to gain some breathing room. A try from Mystic prop Chris O’Donnell with five minutes left, converted by Alatasi Tupou, brought the score to 24-20, but there would be no more scoring and Old Blue would take the win.

Down in Canton, Boston Irish Wolfhounds played host to rivals Boston RFC, with both teams badly needing a win after some recent poor results. The Wolfhounds would win 32-22, with Wolfhounds’ veteran second row Adam Thomas leading his side to the win.

Five tries for the Wolfhounds to one for Boston might suggest one story, but the game itself was something different, and featured four lead changes with the young Boston side regaining the lead with twenty minutes to go.

The Wolfhounds would finish stronger, enjoying the benefits of having a full squad available to hit for two final quarter tries to notch the win.

Was Wolfhounds’ coach Fergal Hehir nervous when Boston took the lead mid way through the second half? “To be honest, I wasn’t” he said, “I thought we would score if we strung a few phases together, and finally having our full team together after so long ….especially in our back line with Dustin Cooper and Peter Upton coming in made a huge difference…and I was always confident we could score”.

There is one game on the cards this weekend, with NYAC looking to rebound from their loss against Mystic last week, but going on the road against Life University won’t be an easy task for the New York side.

ARP 2015-2016 Week 4 Mystic over Boston, NYAC over Boston Irish, Life over Old Blue

October 3rd was a busy day for the ARP, with lots of points scored in the three games on offer. By Mystic River’s count, it had been seven years since the club’s last win over rivals Boston RFC, a fact you could scarcely believe after witnessing the 58-13 drubbing Mystic inflicted on their local rivals.

Mystic generally had the better of the first half against Boston, scoring three tries against two penalties for a 22-6 halftime lead. After weathering a yellow card relatively unscathed, Mystic turned on the jets in the second half, rolling in half a dozen tries in the win, with winger Chris Frazier finishing off his hat-trick. Boston closed out the scoring with a short range try for the final score of 58-13.

Down in Canton, MA, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds had a much more respectable outing as compared to the previous week, taking an early lead and leading visiting NYAC for much of the first half. The offense ruled the second half as the teams racked up five pointers, and an early flurry of those put NYAC ahead to stay and run out to a 52-27 win.

The third game of the day had Old Blue of NY on the road in Georgia against Life University. An early try put Life on the front foot, and though Old Blue’s Luke Hume pulled on back mid way through the first half, all the other scoring was done by the hosts, who ran out 46-7 winners.

This upcoming weekend, Oct 17th, Boston entertains Old Blue with both sides looking to rebound from heavy losses, while Mystic River hosts NYAC in an intriguing matchup.

On the final competitive weekend of the ARP before the winter break, Life University cruised to a somewhat surprising 61-6 win over visiting Old Blue New York in Georgia, while near Boston, eighty minutes of hard rugby failed to put any separation between the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Boston RFC, the game ending deadlocked at 22 points each.

Uruguay 27 USA 27

In the first of the two games that will decide who goes through to the World Cup in Group B, USA and Uruguay tied at 27-27. After a poor first half, the USA took the lead through two well worked tries from Samu Manoa and Chris Wyles. Uruguay came back to tie the game, taking advantage of a creaky USA scrum down the stretch.  Playing a man down in the scrum, blind side winger came in to flank the scrum, and Uruguay took advantage of the overlap to score an easy try in the corner to tie the game.  Might have been just as well, as yet another scrum penalty might have meant a penalty try and an easy conversion.  As it was, the conversion was missed and the game ended in a tie.

All to play for next week in the second leg.

Mandela wearing the jersey of Springbok captain Francois Pienaar in the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final is an iconic image.

One of my earlier recollections of issues with South Africa was when some store clerks in Dublin refused to stock South African produce and went on strike. That was an early salvo in the drive to put the squeeze on South African economy, a drive which helped end apartheid in that country.

All Americans fall to Ontario Blues

In the final game of the Men’s Collegiate All Americans Summer tour, the AA’s dropped a 31-16 decision to the Ontario Blues at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA.

Following two hard games against Cambridge University, the All Americans had their hands full with the Canadian team, which was blending some newer players with several highly experienced ones in advance of the start of the Canadian season.

The MCAA’s had the better of the opening scoring opportunities but it took about twenty minutes to resister the first score, a drop goal by Kaleikaumakei Konrad. Ontario replied almost immediately, taking advantage of a turnover in midfield and using superior numbers for winger Jake Webster to jog in for five points.

Minutes later, the Ontario center combination of captain Derek Daypuck and Dan Moor combined for another Ontario score, Daypuck making a big break and Moor finishing it off. Daypuck in particular was highly visible throughout the day.

After a Madison Hughes penalty reduced the arrears to 6-12, Ontario again seemed to be about to score after a length of the field movement, but Hughes tracked down the attacker to preserve the score line.

Just before the half, a line break by center Kingsley McGowan led to a score by supporting second row Mike Lawrenson. The Hughes conversion gave the MCAA’s the lead 13-12.

Ten minutes into the second half, Ontario outhalf Shawn Windsor notched a try after a period of sustained pressure for a lead Ontario would not relinquish. Ontario was starting to enjoy the bulk of the territorial battle throughout much of the second half.

As time began to wind down, another Hughes penalty closed the gap to 16-19. But by now playing with a man advantage Ontario would finish stronger, with replacement David Worsley scoring in the corner and Dan Moor getting his second near the posts to wrap things up for a final score of 31-16 in favor of Ontario.

Coach Matt Sherman commented afterwards: “Hot temperatures, physical, experienced, big team and the third game in eight days, we knew it would be a tough game with lots of challenges to overcome. I think overall we rose to much of those challenges pretty well. There are a few things we could do better, and they are good learning experiences for our guys but overall there were a lot of positives out of this game….the boys stuck together and defended well and took pride in everybody doing their part and not having any letdowns… In the second half we struggled with the territory battle, as we did better in the first half, and that forced us to play more defense, and obviously playing a man short in the last fifteen minutes, finally the gates opened in the last five minutes, but we came within two meters of taking the lead even while down a man, that was pretty impressive but we came up a little short”.

Men’s Collegiate All-Americans take both games against Cambridge University

The USA Rugby Men’s Collegiate All Americans completed the sweep against visiting Cambridge University on Wednesday June 25th, adding a 22-12 win to the 27-15 win a few days earlier.

The game was played at Pine Banks in Malden, MA, a late switch from the planned location at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA.

The game was barely five minutes old when Cambridge winger Paul Loudon latched onto a cross field kick to score in the corner for a five point lead.

The MCAA’s scrumhalf Madison Hughes reduced the arrears with a penalty kick a few minutes later. Mid way through the half, Hughes was instrumental in the first try for the home side, breaking down the blind side from a scrum before feeding Kingsley McGowan who took the ball in to put the MCAA’s in the lead. Hughes converted and despite enterprising play from both sides, the half ended with no more scoring and the MCAA’s ahead 10-5.

Early in the second half had Cambridge taking advantage of a strengthening breeze to pressure the MCAA goal line, but a knock on over the line and a couple of missed penalty attempts kept the score-line the same. Shortly after this period of pressure, a nice passing movement between Hughes, flanker Vili Toluta’u and winger Chris Turori ended with Toluta’u scoring to push the score to 15-5.

With about half an hour gone in the second, the MCAA”s had another try in the corner, McGowan and number 8 Shaun Potgieter linking up for the score. After a long delay for a leg injury to Connor Cook of Arkansas State, Cambridge finally received some reward for their efforts, with winger Paul Lodon getting his second score. Fraser Gillies converted to leave the final score at 22-12.

After the game, MCAA Coach Matt Sherman commented “The performance was better than in the fist game. But we knew we needed a better performance, as we knew they were both rested and improved from the first game.  The boys dug deep from the well and it was a gutsy win”.

When pushed, Sherman mentioned “he front row did a good job, we had them in there for 50 minutes and they stepped up. Mike Lawrenson also was phenomenal, defensively, in the lineout and he had some good carries. Kaleikaumaka Konrad had a nice kicking game and kept the game flowing”.

Next up for the All Americans is the final game of the Summer tour, against Ontario Blues, scheduled for the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Saturday June 28th at 2.30.

USA beats Canada in wild game in Scaramento June 21st, 2014

The USA Eagles got the better of Canada on Saturday night in a game that had big momentum swings throughout. The game also marked the end of the winning streak Canada has enjoyed and gives the Eagles a nice reward for their efforts this summer.

The game itself was strange to behold, as Canada looked lethargic throughout and the Eagles repeatedly and easily broke the gain line to run out to an 18-7 lead. Then in a shocking change of fortune, Canada scored 28 unanswered points in a short span that straddled halftime and seemed to be running away with the game 35-18.

Instead it was the USA that improved, and the Eagles came roaring back to take a 38-35 lead. There were a few anxious moments near the end as Canada attacked frantically, turning down an easy three pointer to go for the win as time was up, but the Eagles were able to repel the Canadians and take the win.
