2013 Division 1 Week 5

Week five is in the books, and a very real divide is showing up in the league standings.  Leading the table with a perfect 4-0 record is Boston RFC.  Boston got by Mystic River 33-13 in Pine Banks in Malden on Saturday, stretching a 13-3 halftime lead into another bonus point win to extend the perfect season so far. Hot on Boston’s heels is NYAC, with a reported 34-17 win over White Plains.

With Boston, NYAC and Old Blue setting the pace at the top of the standings, there is a furious battle among the rest of the teams to stay within striking distance.  With Mystic facing an uphill battle against Boston, it was left to The Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Middlesex RFC to try to leapfrog Mystic in the standings.  At the Wolfhounds’ home field, the hosts did just that, posting a solid 43-12 win over the injury depleted Middlesex to earn the Wolfhounds’ second win of the season.

The game started perfectly for the Wolfhounds, forcing a turnover on the opening kickoff and powering over for a score in the fourth minute. A few minutes later, the Wolfhounds pack executed a series of hard rolling mauls covering 40 meters to push the score to 10-0.

More of the same pushed the score to 15-0 by the fifteenth minute. Middlesex were hit with a yellow card for a dangerous tackle shortly afterwards, and the Wolfhounds gladly took advantage, notching two more tries while a man up for a 26 point lead before the half hour mark.

Middlesex took the game to their hosts, enjoying long periods of pressure, aided no doubt by three yellow cards to the Wolfhounds for persistent infringements as the action flowed back and forth. Middlesex closed the gap to 12-36, but it was the Wolfhounds who closed out the game, scoring another try to leave the final score at 43-12 in the Wolfhounds’ favor.

Wolfhounds’ coach Fergal Hehir noted “we needed the win, we are still scrappy in large periods of our play, but I’m pretty happy, especially we played well in the first thirty minutes. Middlesex are good when they get it wide so we tried to restrict that and then we played it down the channels fairly well, so I’m pretty happy tonight”.

Middlesex coach Josh Smith added “I thought the Wolfhounds did a good job of wearing us down with their size, starving us of ball and keeping us hemmed in our end so we couldn’t get anything going offensively…I thought the Wolfhounds back three did a good job, we wanted to put them under duress and they took that away….our lock Dave McKenna had another standout game, he has stepped up as a leader of the club. Although the first meeting between the two sides was a close game, White Plains (0-4) face another tough assignment as they travel to Boston (4-0) on October 12. Mystic River (1-3) travels to NYAC (4-0) in a rematch of the first week of the season where NYAC was somewhat fortunate to take the win.  The final game has the Wolfhounds (2-3) on the road in New York against Old Blue (3-1).  Old Blue won a lopsided encounter in Week 1.  The Wolfhounds are improving, but Old Blue will be looking to get back on track after a loss to Boston last week.
