Mixed results for the New England teams in the inaugural week of Atlantic Premiership Rugby, with Boston RFC taking an important road win in New York against Old Blue, while the Boston Irish Wolfhounds were handed a defeat at the hands of NYAC.

In Canton, hosts Boston Irish Wolfhounds were forced to play a lot of defense against NYAC, which they did solidly for the first twenty minutes. It was the Wolfhounds who scored first, scrumhalf Mike Durant scoring a try in the corner, the Paddy Owens conversion was good from the sideline.

NYAC got on the board in the 25th minute, scoring a short range try through Chris Baumann, converted by Justin Hundley. With ten minutes left in the half, NYAC took the lead with another short range try, Patrick Fiffe (updated-ed.) getting the credit for that one. With a Wolfhounds flanker in the bin for a team infringement, NYAC added ten points in the last four minutes of the half to take a 22-7 lead into half time.

The second half started disastrously for the hosts, giving up an intercept try at the restart. With a second Wolfhound heading for the bin, NYAC hit top speed, running in two more tries in quick succession. NYAC center Troy Hall was a force throughout the game, running in four tries on the day.

Mid way through the second half, it was NYAC forced to play goal-line defense, and eventually the referee awarding a penalty try due to successive defensive penalties. The Wolfhounds soon added another try and started to push hard for a fourth, which would give the Wolfhounds a consolation point, but the NYAC defense held firm and indeed scored a long range try to finish out the game with the scoreboard reading 58-21.

NYAC representative Neil McMillan reflected afterward “we banked on ourselves that our training was going to be tough enough….it was a good first run out, we got the maximum points which is what we needed. A big thing for me was in the last ten minutes when they were ramping up to get a bonus try, we managed to hold them out which was good….we have a long way to go, but it was nice to see our people click on the first day”.

Wolfhounds coach Fergal Hehir commented “You have to give NYAC a lot of credit, they are a fine side. To get to that type of standard you have to improve, but you can’t get there until you play against them, I was happy with the way we finished but we were beaten by a better side….we gave them two silly tries in the first half, with possession we gave away, and when you make mistakes like that you are going to get punished”. Hehir went on to comment on the reserves “some of the subs who came in did very well, will make selections very difficult for next week”.

Down in New York, Boston came away with a big road win against Old Blue. Boston’s Richie Lobb hit a drop kick and a penalty for a six point lead, before the hosts replied with a penalty kick and an unconverted try just before halftime to take an 8-6 lead.

Boston regained the lead with an unconverted try by Glynn MacKenzie early in the second half, before Old Blue recaptured the lead with another unconverted try, this try coming from a rolling maul just like their earlier one. The teams exchanged penalty kicks, and the lead, with Old Blue holding a 16-14 lead in the 72nd minute.

In the 74th minute, Boston’s Colin Yip scored a long distance try to give Boston a 21-16 lead, and put up a stiff defensive front for the rest of the game to secure the win.

Boston will have a week off and then entertain Life University on Sept 27th. Boston Irish will be at home against Old Blue on the 20th.
