Exciting developments in top level rugby

There are many encouraging signs for local men’s top level rugby in 2018 and beyond.

We have seen the solidification of the Major League Rugby’s upcoming plans, with the schedule for 2018 published, addition of top notch broadcast outlets, and, more important for us in New England, the announcement of the New York franchise, called Rugby United New York.

After a down year locally in 2017, with the ongoing struggles of Boston and Boston Irish, coupled with a difficult Fall campaign for Mystic River, the top D1 team in the region, we needed some good news on the club scene. The establishment of the New York franchise will naturally mean looking for potential expansion sites and Boston would presumably make the short list.

In the meantime, RUNY is playing Mystic River in an exhibition series, with the first game in New York Saturday March 24th, with a return fixture the following week in Pine Banks in Malden. The New York side will be a formidable challenge for Mystic.  New York is coached by former USA Eagles coach Mike Tolkin and the squad boasts several names you will recognize from the recent rosters of Old Blue and NYAC.

However Mystic has done some rebuilding of its own, with several high profile players joining the squad as well as an influx of local post college talent. Coach Josh Smith hopes to expand the talent pool even more once the weather conditions make outdoor activities more productive.

Best of luck to both teams in the exhibition series.
