Week 3 American Rugby Premiership Sept 27, 2014

In week 3 action, NYAC tops Old Blue in dramatic last minute fashion 29-28, while Life University accelerated away in the second half to defeat Boston RFC 42-10.

The big rivalry game in New York apparently lived up to its billing, as Old Blue took a six point lead with six minutes remaining courtesy of a penalty try, but NYAC came back with a converted try to snatch the win away from Old Blue.  NYAC moves to (2-1) while Old Blue slips to (1-2).

In the top club game in New England this weekend, Life University played Boston RFC under perfect conditions for spectators on Saturday night. Life demonstrated why the club is currently National Champions, playing an up-tempo game that had Boston stretched several times.

The game started ominously for Boston, with Life getting on the board in the sixth minute through an AJ MacGinty try. Boston took advantage of  a Life mistake to get three points back through a Richie Lobb penalty, but immediately afterwards Life reclaimed the restart and spun the ball wide for a try by Cornelius Dirksen.

The rest of the first half was one of missed opportunities by Life, plus an increasing penalty count against Life that helped out the Boston defense. Boston closed out the half strongly, as Lobb pierced the strong Life defense for a try that he converted himself and the score at the half was 12-10 to Life.

Thoughts of a Boston comeback were dashed at the start of the second half, with a rejuvenated Life squad firing on all cylinders with the pack securing possession and the ball being spun wide for the backs to exploit. Life scored three tries in thirteen minutes, Shawn Davies, Lance Cavanaugh and MacGinty all crossing for tries for MacGinty to convert.

Life added a couple of penalties mid way through the half before Boston enjoyed a period of pressing the Life line, but the tryline was not to be breached again, and Life closed out the game with another penalty to leave the final score 42-10.

“I’m pretty happy with our performance, even in the first half” said Life Coach Dan Payne. “We played some really good rugby, put some continuity together. In the first half we had some inopportune mistakes, some calls that went against us…we were playing well, we just had to keep more composure and make less mistakes. We did that in the second half, as the guys committed to that at halftime and …we came out an played a much better second half”.

Boston coach Mike Diamatopoulos commented “We just didn’t cope with the width they played with, AJ (MacGinty) was playing really wide and we didn’t get inside pressure on him so the backs were one on one every time and they have some really good backs. (We had some) inopportune turnovers and they just punished us”.
