The 2022 Women’s Premier League National Championships kick off this weekend, June 24-26^th at the Chicago Blaze rugby complex in Lemont IL, near Chicago.

New England will be represented by perennial powerhouse Beantown.  Beantown boasts a solid 5-3 record but had to dig deep to get into the final four, even having to do a last minute trip to Atlanta to fulfill a re-scheduled fixture that was originally meant to be played in Boston. That was just one of five long road trips the club had to endure this season, but in the end it was successful and Beantown was rewarded with the ticket to the last four.

First up for the Beantown ladies will be a tough match against New York Rugby. New York has only lost once this season, on the road against Colorado. The other teams in the top bracket are the Berkeley All Blues and Colorado Grey Wolves (formerly Glendale), so a very high level of competition should be in store for the weekend.

All ten teams in the WPL will be in action in Chicago, and all are expected to stick around for the games and the trophy presentation, in an apparent effort to express unity and bring the rugby community together in what was a challenging year.

Beantown RFC had its first game of the 2022 Women’s Premier League last weekend on the West coast. In a close game, it was Life West Gladiatrix that came out ahead by a score of 17-10. Beantown salvaged a losing bonus point despite the loss.

Despite the loss, head coach Christopher Mutty was upbeat. “Really good match despite the conditions…..We really showed what we can do at the set piece and our defense was phenomenal”.

Mutty can see the possibilities for the future: “(we) have some work to do on attack and converting scoring opportunities into points”.

Beantown gets another opportunity on the road again this weekend against Atlanta on April 24^th. Atlanta suffered a big loss at home in its first game, losing 51-0 to Berkeley, so you would think there are opportunities to get some points on the board before Beantown’s home opener April 30^th.

UPDATE 4/21/22: Beantown will not travel to Atlanta, as Atlanta cannot field a complete team. Good for Beantown. Not so good for the League, which now has three forfeits in the first three weeks, by two teams.

Beantown RFC will have its first game in the Women’s Premier League this coming weekend, on April 16^th against Life West Gladiatrix, with the game scheduled to kick off at noon Pacific Time on the campus of St. Mary’s College in the Bay area.

The Women’s Premier League kicked off last weekend, with four games scheduled.  Beantown had a bye week in the first round. Beantown will complete in the five team Blue Conference of the ten team league.

Elsewhere in the League, road teams were the happier, with New York defeating San Diego and Colorado downing Oregon.

There are going to be hiccups along the way as the league gets back on its feet after a two year hiatus, but hopefully as much of a full slate of games as possible will be played.

There won’t be a live stream of the game, as far as I know. After the trip to Life West, Beantown visits Atlanta on the 24^th before having the first home game on April 30 against Berkeley All Blues.

The USA Women’s invitees to the spring Daily Training Environment were named this week, and as usual, New England is well represented. Cassidy Bargell and Erica Jarrell from Harvard University are named to the squad.  Cassidy, from Colorado, and Erica, from Lincoln, who are both uncapped, will join the Beantown duo Kathryn Treder (two caps) and Stacey Bridges, who is the the most experienced on the list with 40 caps to her credit.

September 5th, 2017: Beantown made a successful return to the Women’s Premier League with a 39-22 win over the visiting Atlanta Harlequins on Saturday. Beantown dominated throughout the day, and the winner was rarely in doubt. Beantown’s forwards controlled much of the game, starving Atlanta of decent possession and keeping their speedy wings in check.

Beantown entertain New York next weekend in their next scheduled game,

There is but one New England team still left in the quest for a national title, and it is Beantown Women, who play in the USA Rugby Women’s Division 1 title game on Saturday June 13 at Infinity Park in Glendale, CO. Beantown’s opponent will be the Seattle Saracen’s Women, expected to be a very tough opponent. Kickoff will be at 7PM EST, just before the Men’s Division 1 title game between New York Athletic Club (NYAC) and Austin Blacks. All Championship games will be broadcast live on USARugbyTV.com.

Beantown’s trip to the Championship game started with a win over local rivals Boston Women, which Beantown won 19-12.  From there, wins over Chicago North Shore (25-13) and Pittsburgh (48-17) over two days in Charlotte NC propelled Beantown into the decider.

Beantown’s opponent the Seattle Saracens charged through its’ qualifiers, beating Denver 31-10 and then demolishing Santa Monica 47-0. Such is the strength of both teams that six Seattle players were recently selected for a USA Rugby National All Star camp, as well as four Beantown players and two coaches..

As we detailed last week, one of the recipients of the historic sevens playing contracts  was Katie Dowty.  New England Rugby staff members caught up with Katie as she was preparing to move into her new digs in Chula Vista. 

New England Rugby  – Katie, were you expecting to get the contract, or actively bidding for it?

Katie Dowty  – Ric had told some of us that the contracts were a possibility, so I certainly was never expecting a contract but I was hoping for it and could only keep working hard and performing in hopes of earning one.  When he told me I’d be getting one of the eight contracts I was bursting inside – it’s a dream come true of course, but it’s opportunity that none of us could even dream of when we fell in love with rugby, so in a way it’s even MORE than a dream come true.  It’s unbelievable.
