2013 Division 1 Week 4

On the grounds of Harvard University, Boston RFC and New York Old Blue served up an entertaining spectacle as expected, with Boston winning the free flowing contest.  Boston took advantage of a significant breeze to open up a ten point margin early on, Duran Vota with a try and Niko Ratunaitavuki adding points with the boot. The game was even for much of the rest of the first half before Jordan Badia broke through for a try for Old Blue. Now it was Adam Sidall’s turn to kick some points for Old Blue, and he narrowed the deficit to 10-13 before halftime.

Boston was first on the board in the second half as well, with the backs again prominent, notably some slick handling by Ratunaitavuki as Boston notched another try. The back and forth continued as Old Blue scored in the corner to narrow the gap to 15-20. Old Blue has the opportunity to move ahead but a few kicks at goal were off the mark and Boston scored again to move ahead 27-15.

Entering the final fifteen minutes of the game, Boston’s Ratunaitavuki intercepted a pass and won the race to the corner to push Boston ahead 32-15 and essentially out of reach. The back and forth continued with the sides trading tries and the final score entered the books at Boston 37 Old Blue 20.

Boston’s coach Mike Diamantopoulos complemented the efforts of his forwards, noting “we worked hard on our scrums recently, as Old Blue gave us many problems the last time we played, but we provided a good platform for our backs today. The backs are playing very well also, with Niko excellent and Atoa Ripley also very good today”.

Old Blue’s Stephen Lewis added “credit is due to Boston, they are our long time rivals and it was a good win for them.  We are very disappointed, we had the wind and we were in a good position at half time. Our first up tacking was a cause for concern and it got worse in the second half and we started chasing the game.  Overall it was a disappointing day at the office, but it is a long season and it is not the end of the world”.

Down in White Plains, the Boston Irish Wolfhounds scored their first win of the season, defeating a reportedly depleted White Plains side 22-17.  Wolfhounds scrum-half Fred Deangelo put the first score on the board after fifteen minutes, followed ten minutes later by another from Sean Pike.  White Plains answered somewhat against the run of play with a converted try to set the halftime score at 14-7.

In the second half, White Plains started exerting influence on the game, aided by a Wolfhounds yellow card. Ten unanswered points for White Plains put the hosts ahead with ten minutes to play, but the Wolfhounds finished strongly with back row Alex Verdauger making amends for his yellow card by scoring in the corner following a lineout and driving maul. Eddie Tubridy finished the scoring with a penalty near the finish to give the Wolfhounds the 22-17 win. The Wolfhounds are now (1-3) and White Plains drop to (0-4).

Also in New York, the NYAC juggernaut continues to gain speed, with NYAC racking up a 65-8 win over visiting Middlesex.  NYAC is (3-0) and will host White Plains next week, while the Wolfhounds play host to Middlesex (1-2).
