October 1, 2016: ARP Week 4

Week 4 in the ARP had NYAC getting the better of Old Blue 19-13, and Mystic River defeating the Boston Irish Wolfhounds 28-11.

You know those nice crisp, clear, Fall days that everyone loves? Yeah, this wasn’t one of those. Overnight steady rain gave way to a cold drizzle that continued for much of the game between the defending Division One National Champions Mystic River, and the local challengers the Boston Irish Wolfhounds.

Despite the slippery conditions the teams generated some entertaining rugby with Mystic eventually wearing down the visitors. A Nick Fujiwara try was drop-kick converted by Alatasi Tupou for a 7-0 Mystic lead mid way through the first half. An apparent Paddy Owens equalizer was called back on an obstruction penalty, but the Wolfhounds would claw back a three pointer by Tadhg Leader as the half expired for a 7-3 Mystic lead.

Mystic stretches the lead with another converted try, as the Wolfhounds tried to keep pace with another Leader penalty. At 14-6 the game was finely balanced, but Mystic proved to be better able to grasp opportunities and some hard running by the Mystic pack was rewarded with another converted try.

Alatasi Tupou scored his second try of the half as time was starting to wind down to secure Mystic’s fourth try and the valuable bonus point. Tupou’s conversion pushed his points total in the game to 18. With Mystic in card trouble, the Wolfhounds’ Leader scored a try in the corner bring the score to 28-11, and despite a flurry of extra time activity, there would be no more scoring in the game.

“We put in a pretty good performance, we battled them well” said Wolfhounds coach Fergal Hehir afterwards, adding “our back line matched their back line, which was the big difference from last year.  Mystic probably deserved it on the run of the game, but I think we gave them all they wanted”.

Mystic River coach Josh Smith commented “winning the bonus point I guess was the result we wanted, but the product on the field was not good. Our discipline was terrible, we did a terrible job adjusting to the elements, where the Hounds played territory football and really hurt us with it and we didn’t adjust to it, and other than getting the five pointer I was frustrated with the match.

More high profile games are on the local bill for next weekend, with Old Blue coming to Boston and NYAC visiting Mystic. Old Blue will be a handful for Boston, especially since Old Blue just lost to NYAC and will be looking to rebound, and the NYAC v Mystic clash should provide loads of entertainment.
