ARP 2016 Week 1 Sept 10 Old Blue, NYAC cruise to wins

The New York sides had an excellent start to their fall ARP campaigns on the opening weekend, with Old Blue riding a dominant forwards performance to cruise to a 56-0 win on the road against the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, while New York Athletic Club downed Boston RFC by a reported score of 50-10.

In Canton, following a memorial service for Patrick “Punter” Culleton, Old Blue and the Wolfhounds kicked off in nice but increasingly hot and humid conditions. Old Blue wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, with Rich Kirkland touching down to open the scoring in the first five minutes.  James Bird added the points for an early 7-0 lead.

Old Blue passed up an opportunity to add a three pointer by kicking to the corner, but the Wolfhounds successfully repulsed the attack. Midway through the half, Bird does slot a penalty for a ten point lead.

Signs are ominous for the Wolfhounds, as Old Blue completely destroys a couple of Wolfhound scrums. Old Blue has a strong side, with Demecus Beach, Harry Higgins and Trevor Cassidy prominent in the pack. With the Wolfhounds attempting to run out of their 22, Cassidy turns over the ball in a maul and brings it back untouched for another try.

The Wolfhounds turn down an opportunity for a three pointer by kicking for the corner, but the attack is seen off by Old Blue. A pretty drop kick from Connor Wallace-Sims and another try at the end leaves the halftime score at 27-0 in Old Blue’s favor.

A promising second half start for the Wolfhounds goes to naught as Old Blue take the ball back 95 meters for a try. Old Blue substituted liberally soon after but still dominated play, earning another try midway through the half before finishing with a flourish, scoring three tries in the final twelve minutes for a 56-0 scoreline.

“It’s nice to win, it’s a good start for us, though there’s plenty to work on” commented Old Blue coach Marty Veale afterwards, complimenting “the hard work the boys have put in for the last few weeks, we can see that it’s going to work, so it’s quite pleasing”.

Wolfhounds coach Stu Abbott, in comments after the game sad “it’s a new team for us and we are trying to play a new brand of rugby and it’s going to take a while for that to break in.  But credit to Old Blue, (they are) a good side and their #10 had a fine game. They have probably the strongest scrum in the whole league and they made us pay with that. We had a fair amount of unforced errors and a lot of things we need to tighten up on”.

The Wolfhounds will have the opportunity to test out their improvement next week, with a trip to Boston RFC. Old Blue will host Mystic River, a game Marty Veale is already focused on. “We know that (Mystic’s) forwards will come at us and so we have to tidy up our scrum and our first phase cleanouts…and we are looking forward to the challenge against the reigning D1 Champions and it will be a good challenge for us”.
