Week 5 American Rugby Premiership October 25, 2014

On the final competitive weekend of the ARP before the winter break, Life University cruised to a somewhat surprising 61-6 win over visiting Old Blue New York in Georgia, while near Boston, eighty minutes of hard rugby failed to put any separation between the Boston Irish Wolfhounds and Boston RFC, the game ending deadlocked at 22 points each.

Uruguay 27 USA 27

In the first of the two games that will decide who goes through to the World Cup in Group B, USA and Uruguay tied at 27-27. After a poor first half, the USA took the lead through two well worked tries from Samu Manoa and Chris Wyles. Uruguay came back to tie the game, taking advantage of a creaky USA scrum down the stretch.  Playing a man down in the scrum, blind side winger came in to flank the scrum, and Uruguay took advantage of the overlap to score an easy try in the corner to tie the game.  Might have been just as well, as yet another scrum penalty might have meant a penalty try and an easy conversion.  As it was, the conversion was missed and the game ended in a tie.

All to play for next week in the second leg.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, 1918-2013

Mandela wearing the jersey of Springbok captain Francois Pienaar in the 1995 Rugby World Cup Final is an iconic image.

One of my earlier recollections of issues with South Africa was when some store clerks in Dublin refused to stock South African produce and went on strike. That was an early salvo in the drive to put the squeeze on South African economy, a drive which helped end apartheid in that country.

Mandela’s epic struggle and accomplishments will ensure his name will go into the history books with few peers. If you would like to get a better idea of the rugby world in South Africa during his time, Donald McRea’s book Winter Colors is the definitive place to start.

Big win for the USA Eagles in London, beating Russia 28-7. Apparently the Eagles could have scored more points, especially in the first half which would have put the game to bed earlier.

On the heels of a close win over Georgia last week and a narrow loss to the New Zealand Maoris, this is one of the best three week stretches in a long time for the USA. All the more disappointing the game was not streamed live. See thisisamericanrugby especially for some pointed commentary on that.

That game will be streamed live at 5am (link below), and if anyone thinks that game will be easy, consider Georgia defeated Canada last weekend.
